Why I Believe Stories Are Stronger Than Titles

Linda was different. Well, that is not how she would describe herself - but we - a curious university audience, soon realized that.

Linda told us her life story.

From being a single mum and overworked nurse - to later collaborating with Sir Richard Branson and Prince (now King) Charles. On the screen behind her, photos.

From serving tsunami victims to helping remote tribes adapt their native medicine practices to create safer options - Linda jumped in at the frontline, changing things around.

Using convincing stories, every day led her to the next opportunity, the next chance to put her nursing and caretaking skills to serve on a global level.

Her speaking visit ended in tears and soon after, standing ovations, drowning Beyonce’s goosebump triggering lyrics from the speakers…

“I was here.
I lived, I loved

I was here

I did, I've done
everything that I wanted

And it was more than I thought it would be

I will leave my mark so
everyone will know
I was here

I wanna say I lived each day, until I die
And know that I meant something in somebody's life

The hearts I have touched will be the proof that I leave
That I made a difference, and this world will see”

You also have met some amazing people in your life.

People who inspired you, who told you a story about how they did this thing or achieved that thing - and years later, their stories still resonate with you. You keep telling them to others, you think about them in your highs and lows.

Thinking back to those people - can you recall their titles? Do you know their employer’s names? Would you remember the name of their degree or the topic of their doctoral thesis?

I doubt it.

And even if - what does it all mean?

Having a title or a degree does not tell me anything about the kind of person you are, or how you will fit into my team, or whether you will be fulfilled in the project I am creating. I want to know your stories, your core skills. The stuff that follows you around, whichever career path you choose. Whether you are a nurse in a hospital - or pack your carry on and go to tsunami areas.

This is about YOU.
This is why I spent the last decade refining the thing that is now known as The Human CV.

I wanted you to be able to be like Linda - before she went on her lifestyle of touring and helping.

I wanted you to be able to see on one page of paper what transferable skills you have, and how they can be used in the years to come. No one remembers your title, knows the company you worked for or the degree you completed 20 years ago.

But they do remember YOU - just like I remember Linda.

This is what I am using all my transferable skills from my 25 years of working life on…
